Monsoon Waterproofing India 2026: Roof, Bath & Wall Cost Guide

What "waterproofing" actually means

Waterproofing is not just an extra coat of paint. A proper job involves cleaning the surface, filling cracks with polymer-modified mortar, applying a bonding primer, then 2–3 coats of an elastomeric or cementitious membrane. The whole surface then cures for 3–7 days before it is exposed to water.

A shortcut "waterproofing coat" is exterior emulsion paint sold with a waterproof label. It lasts one monsoon at best. Proper elastomeric waterproofing lasts 5–8 years on a well-prepared surface.

2026 waterproofing cost by area

Solve24 painters and masons offer these ranges. Metros are at the higher end. Material is often included in the per-sq-ft rate unless noted separately.

When does your roof need waterproofing?

If any of the below is true, book waterproofing before the next monsoon.

• Last monsoon left a damp patch on the top-floor ceiling.
• The terrace has visible hairline cracks or bubbling paint.
• It has been more than 5 years since the last waterproofing job.
• A close neighbour reported similar leaks — often the whole row of flats needs it.
• You want to add cool-coat paint for summer — a combined project saves labour.

Bathroom waterproofing — when to refit vs when to reseal

A bathroom is the most common source of seepage into the flat below. Two levels of fix depending on age.

• Under 5 years old — silicone re-sealing around basin, WC and shower is enough (₹300–₹800 per fixture).
• 5–10 years old, minor damp — spot waterproof over the wet area (₹20–₹50/sq ft) plus re-tile.
• 10+ years old, damp below — full bathroom refit with new waterproof membrane (₹2,500–₹8,000).

What to check before you approve the job

A quick pre-approval walkthrough with the contractor prevents shortcuts.

• Ask what membrane / product will be used and its warranty.
• Ask how many coats and drying time between them.
• Ask for cracks to be filled with polymer-modified mortar, not just cement.
• Ask for photos of the prepared surface before coating begins.
• Get the warranty in writing on WhatsApp — most jobs come with 3–5 year written warranty.
