Electrician
A ceiling fan is one of the simpler electrical installations — but it's also one where mistakes are dangerous (falling fans, wiring shorts). With the right tools, an existing fan hook, and basic care, most homeowners can install one in 30 minutes. Here's the safe way.
Switch off the main breaker for that circuit. Test the existing wires with a voltage tester to confirm they're dead. This is the single most important step — never assume the switch is enough.
~2 min
Most Indian ceilings have a metal hook (kunda) embedded in the slab. Hang from it with your full weight — if it holds, it can hold a fan. If unsure, replace with a fan-rated metal bracket from a hardware store.
~3 min
Attach the down rod to the motor housing per the manual. Slide the canopy over the down rod and secure the cross-pin and split pin. Don't install blades yet — easier to wire without them.
~5 min
Lift the fan onto the ceiling hook. Connect the live (red), neutral (black), and earth (green/yellow) wires using wire nuts — match colour to colour, twist clockwise until tight. Wrap each connection in insulating tape.
~8 min
Push the canopy up against the ceiling, covering the wiring junction. Tighten the canopy screws into the bracket.
~3 min
Screw each blade onto the motor hub one by one. Make sure all screws are equally tight — uneven screws = wobble.
~5 min
Turn the breaker back on. Switch the fan on at lowest speed first. Watch for wobble for 30 seconds. Step it through all speeds. If wobble persists, use the included balancing weights (small clips) on the heaviest blade.
~4 min
Stop and call an electrician if: the existing wires are aluminium (silver-coloured, not copper), the wires are insulated with cracking/old fabric, the ceiling hook is wood (not metal), or you see scorch marks on the wires. These are signs of older or damaged wiring that needs professional inspection. Solve24 lists verified electricians with direct contact and no commission.
