Plumber
A leaky tap wastes 50-100 litres a day and quietly damages the surrounding fixture. Most household tap leaks are a worn-out washer — a ₹5 part and 5 minutes of work. Here's exactly how to fix it without calling a plumber.
Find the angle valve below the basin (or the main supply for the bathroom) and turn it clockwise until tight. Open the leaky tap fully to drain residual water.
~1 min
Most modern taps have a small screw under a coloured cap (red/blue) on top of the handle. Pry the cap off with a flathead, unscrew the handle, lift it off.
~1 min
Use the adjustable spanner to unscrew the brass bonnet (the bell-shaped part below the handle). Counter-clockwise. The spindle assembly will come out with it.
~1 min
At the bottom of the spindle is a small rubber washer held by a screw. Unscrew it, replace with a matching new washer, screw back tight.
~1 min
Wrap 3-4 turns of plumber's tape around the bonnet threads (clockwise). Reassemble in reverse: bonnet, handle, cap. Turn water supply back on. Test the tap — should be drip-free.
~1 min
If the leak continues after a fresh washer, the spindle itself may be worn (uneven seat) — you'll need a plumber to either re-seat or replace the whole tap. For taps older than 8-10 years, replacement is usually cheaper than repeated repairs. Find a verified plumber near you on Solve24 — direct contact, no commission.
