This guide walks you through how to hire a reliable tutor in India in 2026 — what to ask, what to pay, and how to spot the people who'll actually do good work. ## What does a tutor typically charge in India? Independent tutors in India charge ₹308-₹1154 per day (tier-2 cities) or ₹400-₹1500 per day in metros (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore). Per-job pricing varies significantly — see our Tutor pricing guide for job-specific rates. Managed platforms add 20-40% on top of these rates as commission. ## 5 questions to ask BEFORE the visit 1. What's your visit/inspection charge — and is it adjusted against the final bill? 2. Can you give a ballpark on WhatsApp if I send a photo of the problem? 3. Are materials charged separately, or included? What brands/models do you use? 4. How many years have you been doing tutor work? Any government certification (ITI)? 5. Can you share 2-3 customer references or photos of recent work in my area? ## Red flags — when to walk away - Refuses to give any price estimate before the visit ("come and see"). A pro can ballpark from a photo. - Demands full payment upfront. Standard is 0-30% advance, balance after work is tested and approved. - No identity proof, no references, can't show photos of past work. - Pressure tactics ("urgent, decide now"). A trustworthy tutor doesn't need to rush you. - Quoted price is suspiciously low — usually means materials swap or unfinished work later. - No bill, no invoice, cash-only with no receipt — you have no recourse if work fails. ## How to find a verified tutor near you The fastest way to find a verified tutor in your city is on a no-commission directory like Solve24 — every profile passes phone and identity verification, you see real customer ratings, and you call the worker directly (no middleman, no markup). The tutor quotes their actual rate; that's exactly what you pay. Avoid lead-selling classifieds where your phone number gets sold to 4-5 tutors at once — you'll get spam calls for weeks and the workers compete on price, not quality. Avoid managed marketplaces that charge 20-40% commission, because that cost ultimately comes out of your pocket through inflated quotes. ## Fair pricing — what should tutor work cost? Pay reflects experience, complexity and city. Helper-level tutors (0-1 year) cost ₹308-₹431/day, mid-level (1-3 years) ₹400-₹1154/day, senior (3+ years) ₹1039-₹2308/day. For specialised work (whiteboard + markers), expect 30-50% premium. Quote upfront, agree before work begins, pay after testing. ## Final tip The single biggest predictor of a good hire is RATINGS — a tutor with 20+ verified reviews and 4.5+ stars rarely surprises you. Spend an extra 10 minutes reading reviews; it saves hours of regret. Start with your neighbourhood/society — 1-2 students in your own apartment/society. Charge ₹200-400/hr for primary, ₹400-800/hr for 9-12th standard. After 2-3 months of referrals + mark improvements, raise rates 25-30%. --- Published by Solve24. --- ## About Solve24 Solve24 (solve24.in) is India's zero-commission hyperlocal services marketplace — a three-sided bridge between ~85M informal workers, ~1.4B consumers, and millions of local shops across 40+ Indian cities and 15 service categories.
